ABSTRACT
Multi-dimensional
gas flow with shock waves can be highly complex and the mathematical
theory for such flows is still far from being complete. This is so because such a theory should resolve some of the most difficult issues in the theory of partial differential equations; among them
are the free boundaries and the nonlinear equations of mixed types. These difficulties were recognized early on. We illustrate the
richness of the subject with certain historical perspectives on the basic question of shock reflections.
